Hardus sits back and smiles as he remembers where it all started. Music and especially singing was part of his life since childhood. He can still remember his grandfather behind an old organ in their little flat fiddling about on the keyboard.
Then suddenly a familiar melody appears and all his uncles and aunts stand closer. Everyone breaks out in song with harmony. Those where still the days… He grew up in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, South Africa and finished his schooling at the Agricultural High School in Jacobsdal in the Southern Freestate.
His biggest dream was to perform on stage with a full cast doing what he love most, singing. While studying Electrical Engineering in Bloemfontein he received vocal tuition from contra alto Maritha Grové, and then tenors Wilhelm Theunissen, Luigi Bianco and Sjoerd Beute. Productions like Student Prince, Grease, South Pacific and Ruth afforded him the opportunity to rub shoulders with Jannie Moolman, Dewald van Solms and Niel Schoombee. He has also done different shows with brilliant vocalists like Chris Coetzer, Corlea Botha and Jannie du Toit.
“For me, a singer needs to be flexible, to be able to move around between specific genres, without diminishing technique, quality of sound or losing the uniqueness of my voice. Being able to improvise, to make the song your own, so that the music evolves around you, forms my own identity.
It is important to me to extend my emotion through my singing, that my audience becomes sensitive to the music, to intimately experience it with such intensity that it leaves a lasting impression. I aim to reach my full potential in my singing career, to be able to sing old songs with a new, fresh and modern touch” Hardus started recording his first professional CD produced by Christa Steyn in 2011 but had to stop due to Christa's illness. “Out of self defense I had to compile a CD on my own using various recording companies.
When Hardus is not singing he dedicates his time to helping Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre where he helps care for injured, misplaced or orphaned wildlife.
